The cave winepresses are scattered all over the Rioja Alavesa.

These are generally located on high altitude places and frequently associated to old churches, graveyards or deserted areas. These are round shaped constructions caved in the substratum sandstone, which diameter barely exceeds one meter and its depth measures around 30cm . Constituting a basin destined to obtain grape juice by the grape stepping. From this basin, a canal conducted the grape juice into a deposit named ¨torco¨. These winepresses were built between the 9th and 12th centuries and some were used until the 18th century.
